Terms of Service

Effective date: [TO CONFIRM: publication date], 2026
Last updated: [TO CONFIRM: publication date], 2026

These terms are the agreement between you and us about using MealSnap. They cover the iOS app and the mealsnap.app website, including share.mealsnap.app. By using MealSnap you agree to them.

They are written to be readable. Where the law gives you rights as a consumer, nothing here takes them away, and we say so again in Section 12.

1. The short version

  • MealSnap is a photo food diary with AI-generated descriptions and calorie estimates.
  • The estimates are approximations, and MealSnap is not medical or nutritional advice. Read Section 3. It is the most important section here.
  • Your photos and entries stay yours. We only get the permission we need to run the app for you.
  • Pro is sold, billed, renewed, cancelled and refunded by Apple, not by us.
  • If you have or have had an eating disorder, please read Section 3 before you start logging.

2. Who you are dealing with

MealSnap is made and operated by Petr Rusanov, an independent developer in the Netherlands.

"We" and "us" in this document mean that. "You" means you.

3. Important: MealSnap is not medical advice

Please read this properly.

MealSnap is a food diary and a general wellness tool. It is not a medical device. Nothing in the app is medical, nutritional, dietary or psychological advice, diagnosis or treatment.

  • The calorie figures are estimates, and they are deliberately ranges. A photograph cannot tell anyone, human or machine, exactly what is in a meal. There could be oil, butter, sugar or sauce that no camera can see. The range is our way of being honest about that. It is not a measurement, and it should not be treated as one.
  • The descriptions, tags and weekly observations are generated by AI and can be wrong. They are prompts for your own thinking, not conclusions about your health.
  • Do not use MealSnap to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any illness, to manage a medical condition, or to make clinical decisions such as dosing insulin.
  • Talk to a doctor or a registered dietitian before making significant changes to what you eat, and if you have any condition affected by diet, including diabetes, kidney disease, heart conditions, food allergies, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you have or have had an eating disorder, or you recognise disordered eating in yourself, please speak to a professional about whether food, weight and body tracking is right for you at all. For some people it is genuinely harmful. We would rather you were well than that you used our app.
  • In an emergency, call your local emergency number. Do not open a food diary.

You are responsible for what you decide to do with the information in the app. We are not your doctor, your dietitian or your coach, and the app does not pretend to be one.

4. Your account

  • You sign in with Sign in with Apple. That is the only way in, and it means we do not ask you for a name, an email address or a password.
  • One account per person. Do not share your account, and do not use somebody else's.
  • You need to be at least 16 to use MealSnap.
  • Your account holds your diary and syncs it across your own devices. Keep your Apple ID secure, because whoever can sign in as you can read your diary.
  • If you lose access to the Apple ID you signed up with, we cannot recover your account. We have no other information about you to identify you by. That is the direct cost of collecting nothing, and we think it is the right trade, but you should know about it.

5. Your content stays yours

Your photos, descriptions, measurements and everything else you log belong to you. We claim no ownership of any of it.

To run the app, you give us a limited licence to store your content, transmit it, display it back to you, back it up, and process it through the features you use: sending a meal photo for analysis, generating your weekly review, building a PDF, or rendering a share link you created. That licence exists only to operate MealSnap for you, it is not sub-licensable to anyone except the providers listed in our Privacy Policy who do that work on our behalf, and it ends when you delete the content or your account, once deletion completes as described in our Privacy Policy (including the current, honestly stated state of photo-file removal).

We will not publish your content, use it in marketing, or use it to train AI models. If we ever want to show someone's diary in a screenshot, we will ask that person first.

Photographing other people. If your photos include other people, that is your call and your responsibility. Get their agreement before you photograph them, and before you send them anywhere in a share link.

6. AI-generated content

Descriptions, tags, calorie ranges and the weekly and monthly observations are generated automatically. They will sometimes be wrong, occasionally comically so.

  • Check them. Every AI-written field is editable, and once you edit a field the app leaves it alone from then on.
  • We cannot promise any level of accuracy, and we publish no accuracy figure because we have no benchmark that would make one honest.
  • Observations are grounded in what you actually logged, but they are general wellness comments, not advice about you as a patient. See Section 3.

7. MealSnap Pro: subscriptions and billing

The free app is a complete diary. Pro automates more of it: unlimited AI recognition, the stats and trends, weekly and monthly reviews, extra reminders, link sharing and PDF export.

Apple sells it, not us.

  • Prices are shown in the App Store in your local currency before you buy, including applicable tax.
  • Payment is charged to your Apple ID at confirmation of purchase.
  • Monthly and yearly plans renew automatically unless you turn off auto-renew at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Apple charges the renewal within 24 hours of the period ending. The lifetime option is a single payment and does not renew.
  • Manage or cancel in the App Store: your iPhone Settings, your name, Subscriptions. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
  • Refunds are handled by Apple under Apple's Media Services terms, at reportaproblem.apple.com. We cannot issue, block or speed up a refund, because the money never passes through us. If Apple turns you down and you think that is unfair, write to us anyway and we will do what we can.
  • If a subscription lapses, your diary stays. Everything you logged remains yours to read, edit, export and delete. Only the Pro features switch off.
  • We may change what Pro includes or what it costs. Price changes only take effect for you after Apple's notice and consent flow, and never retroactively for a period you already paid for.

8. Share links

Share links and PDF export are Pro features.

  • A share link makes a stretch of your diary readable by anyone who has the link. There is no password. Only send it to people you want reading it.
  • Links stop working seven days after they are created.
  • What you do with a PDF is entirely up to you, and we do not receive a copy.
  • You are responsible for what you share, including anything about other people that ends up in it.
  • If a share link shows photos of you that you never agreed to, or content that infringes your rights, email support@mealsnap.app with the link and we will disable it.

9. Acceptable use

Do not:

  • Break the law with it, or use it to harm anyone
  • Upload content you have no right to upload, or someone else's private images
  • Try to break, overload, probe or circumvent the service, its rate limits or the Pro entitlement checks
  • Reverse engineer, decompile or resell the app, except where law expressly allows it
  • Scrape our systems, or automate the API in ways the app itself does not
  • Use MealSnap to build a competing dataset or to train a machine learning model
  • Use it to give other people medical or nutritional advice as if it were qualified

If you seriously or repeatedly break these rules, we may suspend or close your account. For anything short of abuse or a legal problem, we will contact you first.

10. Availability

We work to keep MealSnap running, but we do not promise it will always be available. It is an app made by one person, hosted on services that occasionally have bad days. There will be maintenance, and sometimes there will be outages.

We may change features, add them, or remove them. If we remove something significant that you paid for, we will tell you before it happens and, where a payment has effectively lost its value, sort it out fairly with you.

Your diary is stored on your device as well as on our servers, so most of it stays readable even when our servers are not.

11. Warranties and liability

MealSnap is provided as it is. Beyond what the law requires of us, we do not warrant that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that any AI estimate or observation will be accurate or suitable for you.

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, lost profits, lost data where you could reasonably have kept your own copy, or for decisions you made about your health based on the app. Where we are liable, our total liability to you is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us (through Apple) for MealSnap in the twelve months before the claim, or 50 euro.

Nothing in this section limits liability that cannot legally be limited, which includes death or personal injury caused by our negligence, fraud, intentional misconduct, or gross negligence.

12. Your rights as a consumer

If you are a consumer in the EU, the EEA or the UK, you have mandatory legal rights that these terms cannot reduce, and we are not trying to. If anything above conflicts with those rights, your rights win and that clause simply does not apply to you.

That includes your statutory right to digital content that conforms to what was described, your legal remedies if it does not, and your 14-day right of withdrawal on a digital purchase. Because Apple is the seller, withdrawal and refund requests go to Apple: see Section 7.

13. Ending it

You can stop at any time. Delete your account in Settings and your entries, share links, reviews and account record are deleted; what that means for stored photo files today is described plainly in our Privacy Policy. Cancel a subscription separately in the App Store, because deleting the app does not cancel it.

We may close an account for serious or repeated breach of Section 9, or if we are legally required to. We will give you notice and a chance to respond unless the situation makes that impossible. If we ever shut MealSnap down entirely, we will give reasonable notice and time to export your data first.

14. Apple's role

You get MealSnap through the App Store, and Apple requires us to say the following, which is also just true:

  • These terms are between you and us. Apple is not a party to them.
  • Your licence to use the app is limited and non-transferable, for use on Apple-branded devices that you own or control, as the App Store terms allow.
  • We, not Apple, are solely responsible for MealSnap and its content.
  • Apple has no obligation to provide any support or maintenance for MealSnap. Support comes from support@mealsnap.app.
  • If the app fails to conform to any warranty that cannot be disclaimed, you may tell Apple and Apple will refund the purchase price; beyond that, Apple has no warranty obligation.
  • We, not Apple, are responsible for handling any claim that the app or your use of it infringes someone's intellectual property, and for product liability claims, claims under consumer protection law, and claims that the app fails to meet a legal requirement.
  • You confirm you are not in a country subject to a US embargo or designated as "terrorist-supporting", and are not on a US restricted-parties list.
  • Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.

15. The small print

Three short clauses that only matter if something goes wrong, kept in plain language:

  • Severability. If any part of these terms turns out to be invalid or unenforceable, the rest stays in force. If a clause is unfair under consumer law, it simply does not bind you; we do not get a rewritten, barely-legal version of it.
  • Survival. Deleting your account ends this agreement, except the parts that by their nature continue: Section 3 (the health disclaimer, for anything from while you used the app), Section 11 (liability), this section, and Section 16 (law).
  • Assignment. You cannot transfer these terms to someone else. We may transfer them to a successor who takes over running MealSnap under these same terms; our Privacy Policy explains what would happen to your data, and we would tell you first.

16. Law and disputes

These terms are governed by the law of the Netherlands, and disputes go to the competent courts of the Netherlands.

If you are a consumer, that does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory law of the country you live in, and you may bring proceedings in your own local courts. If you live in the UK, the law of your part of the UK applies to you and you may sue there.

Before any of that: email support@mealsnap.app. Almost everything is fixable by one person reading your message properly.

17. Changes to these terms

We will update this page when the app changes, and update the date at the top. We change these terms only with good reason: the app changed, the law changed, a security or abuse problem needs a new rule, or the wording needed to be clearer. For changes that materially affect you we will tell you in the app or by a notice on the website before they take effect. If you do not accept a change, stop using MealSnap and, if you like, delete your account. Continuing to use it after a change takes effect means you accept it.
